Energy Healing: What exactly is it?

Updated: Nov 12, 2025

A representation of the universal energy that is used in Reiki

For years I've tried to answer that exact question. Everyone seems to have a different definition of what energy is and where it comes from.

I get asked this a lot, especially when people ask me what I do and I say, "Well, I'm an energy healing facilitator." That's usually when people's faces either shut down or become guarded. It's like they think I'm going to burst into some kind of chant and dance around them, pulling their soul out of their ears.

Energy healing is nothing like that. Nothing like it at all.

Thanks, Hollywood, for filling people's brains with nonsense.

So, here we go. A rundown of what energy is and what using it for healing really means.

1.) Everyone in the world has access to universal energy and uses it every day.

That's a bold statement, right? Well, it happens to be true. Every single person in the world has access to and uses the free, ambient energy around them every day. If they didn't, they would be dead. It's an innate, integral part of life on this planet. Energy flows in and out of everything.

2.) Everything is made of Energy:

What? Are you kidding? No. I'm not. Everything in the world, from the computer I'm typing on to the dog cuddled up next to me, to the wall in front of me, is all made of energy. Now that isn't new. Even mainstream science has kind of told the world that in a roundabout manner, but it doesn't sink in until you think of energy in another way--

3.) Energy is conscious:

Yup. Just as we are conscious, so is the world around us. To varying degrees, sure, but science has been showing us in recent years that animals and plants are conscious on certain levels. They react to stimuli and, in many cases, are not that different from us. Think of how your dog or cat behaves around you. Have you seen any behaviours that might be considered a little human?

So, what does this mean in terms of Energy Healing?

Well, that's a fun topic.

Just as you have a circulatory system that sends oxygenated blood through your veins and brings the deoxygenated blood back to the heart and lungs to be charged up again, so you have an energy system that runs through your whole body.

It's the blueprint that your body was built on, and making sure that energy flows through you, freely, without blocks or compactions, is really important. Many diseases and ills start in your energy fields before they ever manifest in the physical.

Pent-up emotions, destructive behaviours, scares, and a whole lot of other things can result in blockages in the energy grid. If these are left untreated for too long, they can and often do result in discomfort and illness.

There are a great many ways to help to clear this sort of thing, but the best and most efficient way is to find a healing facilitator and to have a session. Just as when you're sick, you go to the doctor for help, so when you're feeling overwhelmed, run down, exhausted, depressed, stressed, or just floaty and unable to focus, you should go for a healing.

Next time, we'll look at the different types of healing modalities out there to help you make an informed choice.
